The National League is run by the Swiss Wrestling Federation organized and, since the reform, consists of three leagues: the Swiss Wrestling Premium League (formerly National League A), the Swiss Wrestling Challenge League (formerly National League B) and the Swiss Wrestling Promotion League (former 1st league).
Swiss Wrestling Premium League (highest league)
Currently, six teams are competing for the Swiss team championship title in the Premium League (as of the 2025 season):
- Kriessern wrestling team
- Einsiedeln wrestling team
- Freiamt wrestling team
- Schattdorf wrestling team
- Willisau Wrestling Club
- Oberriet-Grabs Wrestling Club
The season is played in a preliminary and final round. The four top-ranked teams qualify for the playoffs, which are played in a knockout system with home and away matches. Swiss Wrestling Challenge League (second highest league)
The Challenge League is divided into two geographically randomly drawn groups of four teams each. After the preliminary round, the top two teams from each group advance to the playoffs, while the remaining four teams compete in relegation playoffs to determine their final standings and whether they remain in the league. The winner of each group then faces the bottom-ranked team from the Premium League in a promotion/relegation playoff.
Swiss Wrestling Promotion League (third highest league)
The Promotion League is also organized into two groups (East/West). The group winners compete in the final for the championship title. Promotion is only possible for independent clubs, not for joint teams or reserve teams.
General provisions and format
- Participation : Only clubs that fulfill all statutory obligations are eligible to participate. Clubs must provide referees.
- Licensing : Strict licensing requirements apply (e.g. age and weight limits, foreigner clause).
- Foreigner clause : Foreigners with more than 2 years of residence in Switzerland are considered "Swiss wrestlers".
- No foreigners They may be officially used, with the exception of Swiss wrestlers.
- Dual licenses : Allowed in the 1st league (e.g. for fighting communities), very restricted in the Premium and Challenge Leagues.
- Female wrestlers : Not allowed in the Premium League, allowed in the Challenge League and 1st League.

- Premium & Challenge League: 10 fights (9 weight classes, 75 kg doubles).

Competition rhythm and staging
